Not Gaza, But Gas? Gaza’s Internal Battles and Kuwait’s «جزة» | Media Arabic Booster 10/25

Is Hamas fighting a “fifth column” in Gaza? And what is the name of Kuwait’s new gas field: Jizzah or Jazzah? This Media Arabic Booster unpacks an Asharq Al-Awsat report on armed clans challenging Hamas after the ceasefire, and solves a vocalization puzzle in Al-Seyassah’s headline about a massive offshore discovery.

This edition of the Media Arabic Booster, October 2025, tackles the shadowy conflict brewing in Gaza after the ceasefire. While the main war has paused, a new internal fight is exploding.

Hamas is now in bloody street battles, not with Israel, but with local armed clans and militias. We will analyze a detailed report from Asharq al-Awsat that identifies these factions – from the “Yasser Abu Shabab Group” to the Al-Majayda clan – and explores Hamas’s accusation that they are “operating under Israeli auspices”, turning the external war into a hunt for an enemy within.

You will learn important Media Arabic words to talk about security, politics and diplomacy.

Let’s start our media Arabic lesson.

A close look at a headline

First, we’ll warm up with a headline from the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah and check what جزة means. Hint: It is not Gaza.

Al Seyassah (Kuwait): Gas, not Gaza

On October 13, 2025, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah (السياسة) featured Kuwait Oil Company’s announcement of a major offshore gas discovery. The headline framed the find as a historic achievement and named the field «جزة», which I first read like a weird re-translation of the English writing “Gaza” (غَزَّة).

But reading the subheadlines, I quickly realized it was about something else.

Let’s focus on the headline:

اِكْتِشَافُ حَقْلٍ بَحْرِيٍّ لِلْغَازِ الطَّبِيعِيِّ سَجَّلَ أَعْلَى مُعَدَّلِ إِنْتَاجٍ لِبِئْرٍ عَمُودِيَّةٍ مِنْ «المَنَاقِيش»

Discovery of an offshore natural gas field recorded the highest production rate for a vertical well from “Al-Manaqish”

« جِزَّة» … تِرِلْيُونِيٌّ

“Jizzah”… A Trillion-strong

الأَمِيرُ لِلْقِطَاعِ النَّفْطِيِّ: التَّوْفِيقَ وَالسَّدَادَ نَحْوَ تَحْقِيقِ المَزِيدِ مِنَ الإِنْجَازَاتِ

The Emir to the oil sector: [Wishing you] success and sound judgment toward achieving more accomplishments.

Remark: If you cannot access the article, try this link (archive.org)

So, how big is the discovery? Put in perspective, that 1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) discovery is significant for Kuwait’s development plans but small compared with the country’s neighbors and global leaders.

By late 2025, Kuwait’s total proven gas reserves stood at roughly 63.5 Tcf. Qatar’s reserves are roughly 13-14 times larger, and Russia’s reserves are roughly 25-27 times larger. So, while the new gas field matters strategically for Kuwait, it is modest against the massive regional and global totals.

How do we know how to pronounce جزة?

Native speakers and experienced learners rely heavily on context (grammar, surrounding words, topic) to determine the correct vowels and meaning.

So, here’s the puzzle: the headline in Al-Siyassa just says جزة. Because Arabic in newspapers doesn’t usually include the short vowels (the تَشْكِيل), this word could be pronounced in a few different ways, and each one means something completely different.

How do we figure out the right one? We start by seeing what the dictionary says our options are.

  • Option 1: جِزَّة (Jizzah) This is the most common word. It’s pronounced with a kasra (‘i’ sound) and means “fleece“, as in the wool from a sheep. You may know it from the “Golden Fleece” (الجِزّة الذَّهَبيّة), the golden wool owned by King Aeëtes of Colchis, guarded in a sacred grove by a sleepless dragon, and recovered by Jason and the Argonauts.
  • Option 2: جَزَّة (Jazzah) This one is pronounced with a fatha (‘a’ sound) and is a specific grammatical form called an اِسْمُ مَرَّةٍ (ism marra, or “noun of instance“). It means “a single cut” or “one single haul.”
  • Option 3: جَزَة (Jazah) This is also pronounced with a fatha but no ‘shadda’ (doubling). It’s a very old and obscure placename for a spot in Khorasan (ancient Persia/Central Asia). It’s famous for a battle where the general Asad bin Abdullah al-Qasri (أسد بن عبد الله القسري) defeated the Turkic Khagan back in 737 AD.

So, how do we solve this?

Options 1 and 2 both seem like plausible metaphors for a giant gas discovery, but Option 3 is almost definitely wrong (it’s in the wrong part of the world!).

The best way to know for sure is to check other local, authoritative news sources that covered the official announcement. When we look at an article by Al-Jazeera (based in Qatar; known for high-level Arabic) about the exact same discovery, it helpfully spells out the name with its vocalization:

Arabic text announcing Kuwait Oil Company's discovery of a new offshore natural gas field named 'Jazirah,' one of the largest in the country with an estimated 3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and over 120 million barrels of condensates, according to statements reported by Reuters and the Kuwaiti News Agency.
Al Jazeera about the Kuwaiti gas field (direct link or archive.org)

“…bearing the name ‘Jizzah’ (جِزّة)…

➤ And that settles it! The name is most probably جِزَّة (Jizzah).

Asharq al-Awsat: Hamas Battles Israel’s Alleged “Fifth Column”

On October 16, 2025, the newspaper Asharq al-Awsat (الشرق الأوسط) revealed a new, shadowy war brewing in post-ceasefire Gaza. Hamas is now fighting bloody street battles, not against Israel, but against internal armed clans and militias.

The report maps these factions and their explosive, alleged secret: Hamas accuses them of “operating under Israeli auspices”, suggesting the external war has morphed into a hunt for an enemy within.

ما مصير وأماكن المجموعات المسلحة التي قاتلت «حماس» في غزة؟

“What is the fate and locations of armed groups that fought Hamas in Gaza?”

Let’s now take a closer look at a large part of the article.

Section 1

واجهت حركة «حماس» في قطاع غزة، خلال الحرب الإسرائيلية التي امتدت لعامين بعد هجوم السابع من أكتوبر (تشرين الأول)، العديد من التحديات الداخلية المتعلقة بالعشائر والمجموعات المسلحة التي ظهرت خلال فترة الحرب، وحاولت نشر الفلتان الأمني داخل القطاع.

During the two-year Israeli war that followed the October 7, 2023, attack, Hamas in the Gaza Strip faced numerous internal challenges related to the clans and armed groups that emerged during the war and attempted to spread security chaos within the Strip.

وقبل يومين من دخول وقف إطلاق النار حيز التنفيذ، يوم الجمعة الماضي، دخلت «حماس» في أكبر مواجهة لها مع مسلحين من عشيرة المجايدة في خان يونس جنوب القطاع. وما أن توقفت الحرب، حتى دخلت في معارك أكبر مع مسلحين من عشيرة «دغمش» جنوب المدينة، ولاحقت مجموعات مسلحة عملت تحت رعاية إسرائيل.

Two days before the ceasefire took effect last Friday, Hamas engaged in its largest confrontation yet with militants from the Majayda clan in Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip. Once the war ended, Hamas engaged in larger battles with militants from the Dughmush clan south of the city and pursued armed groups operating under Israeli auspices.

وترصد «الشرق الأوسط» أبرز تلك العشائر والمجموعات وأماكن تمركزها داخل قطاع غزة:

Asharq Al-Awsat monitors the most prominent of these clans and groups and their locations within the Gaza Strip:

📌 A Brief History of Gaza (غَزَّة)

Gaza’s strategic location on the Mediterranean coast has made it a crossroads and often a battleground for millennia.

Ancient Times

Crossroads of Empires

One of the oldest cities in the world, Gaza (Ancient Egyptian: gḏt, Hebrew: עַזָּה ʿAzzā) was a key city for the Canaanites and later the Philistines. It features in the Hebrew Bible (e.g., the story of Samson). Over centuries, it fell under the control of Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Alexander the Great (who besieged it), Ptolemies, Seleucids, and Romans.

Medieval Era

Islamic Rule & Crusaders

Gaza became part of the Islamic Caliphates after the Muslim conquest in the 7th century CE. Imam Al-Shafi’i (الشَّافِعِيُّ), founder of one of the four main Sunni schools of jurisprudence, was born in Gaza around 767 CE. The city changed hands during the Crusades before becoming part of the Mamluk Sultanate and later the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

advertisements

20th Century

British Mandate & Nakba

After World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Gaza fell under the British Mandate for Palestine (الاِنْتِدَابُ الْبَرِيطَانِيُّ عَلَى فِلَسْطِين). The 1947 UN Partition Plan designated Gaza as part of the proposed Arab state.

During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War (النَّكْبَة, Nakba), Gaza received a large influx of Palestinian refugees fleeing or expelled from areas that became Israel. Egypt administered the resulting Gaza Strip (قِطَاعُ غَزَّة).

1967 – Present

Occupation, Autonomy, Blockade

Israel captured the Gaza Strip from Egypt in the 1967 Six-Day War (حَرْبُ الأَيَّامِ السِّتَّةِ or النَّكْسَة, Naksa). Under the Oslo Accords (اِتِّفَاقِيَّاتُ أُوسْلُو) in the 1990s, the Palestinian Authority (السُّلْطَةُ الْفِلَسْطِينِيَّةُ) gained limited self-rule. Israel unilaterally disengaged (فَكُّ الاِرْتِبَاطِ) its settlers and military forces in 2005.

Following internal Palestinian conflict, Hamas (حَمَاس) took control of Gaza in 2007, leading Israel and Egypt to impose a severe blockade (حِصَار) that continues to heavily restrict movement and trade, contributing to dire humanitarian conditions. The strip has seen several major conflicts between Hamas and Israel since then.

Section 2

«مجموعة ياسر أبو شباب»

“Yasser Abu Shabab Group”

Yasser Abu Shabab’s name has become prominent in recent months as the leader of one of the most important armed groups, estimated to number in the hundreds. They possess light weapons, but reside in the city of Rafah, in the far south of the Strip, which is under full Israeli control, even with the ceasefire in effect. Many residents from the same Bedouin Abu Shabab clan also reside in these areas.

With the cessation of the war, Abu Shabab did not speak publicly about the situation inside the Gaza Strip or the future of the groups he formed. For a time, they attempted to expand into Khan Yunis, but it appears that he failed to achieve this, despite his attempt to use members of the Barbakh clan after they attacked the Nasser Medical Complex and the police forces inside and protecting it at the end of last June.

Abu Shabab’s groups, or as Hamas calls them, the “Abu Shabab Gang,” are currently stationed in areas still under Israeli control within the city of Rafah, without any change in their presence. What is noticeable, however, is the cessation of their attacks and their attempts to incite chaos by exploiting the war and Israeli bombardment of some areas to enter and attempt to attack civilians and Hamas members. This has happened several times, whether in the Mawasi area or other areas of Khan Yunis.

وتتهم «حماس»، علناً، مجموعات أبو شباب بأنها «تخدم إسرائيل»، في حين ينفي أبو شباب الذي يسمي مجموعته «القوات الشعبية»، علاقته بإسرائيل أو بالسلطة الفلسطينية، ثم لا يلبث ويتراجع، ويؤكد علاقته بهما بشكل أو بآخر.

Hamas publicly accuses Abu Shabab’s groups of “serving Israel.” Meanwhile, Abu Shabab, who calls his group “Popular Forces,” denies any connection to Israel or the Palestinian Authority, only to quickly retract and confirm his relationship with both in one form or another.

Abu Shabab was not well-known among Palestinians, particularly since he was detained by Hamas police on criminal charges. He had no previous ties to any Palestinian organization. He began to gain greater notoriety after stealing aid trucks near areas where Israeli forces were operating. Hamas pursued him, killing his brother in one of these incidents.

وفعلياً، لم يشكل أبو شباب حتى الآن تهديداً حقيقياً لحركة «حماس»، لكنها قررت توجيه ضربات له لإظهار سيطرتها، ويتوقع أن تنفذ هجمات أخرى ضد مجموعاته لاحقاً، على غرار ما تفعل حالياً ضد مجموعات أخرى.

Abu Shabab has not yet posed a real threat to Hamas, but the movement has decided to strike him to demonstrate its control. It is expected to carry out further attacks against his groups later, similar to what it is currently doing against other groups.

Section 3

حسام الأسطل

Hussam al-Astal

تنتشر مجموعة حسام الأسطل الموجودة في مناطق جنوب شرقي خان يونس، وتحديداً مناطق قيزان النجار، وجورة اللوت، والمنارة، وتتكون من نحو 40 مسلحاً، وما زالت تتمركز هناك باعتبار أنها مناطق ما زالت تنشط فيها القوات الإسرائيلية.

Hussam al-Astal’s group, located in the areas southeast of Khan Yunis, specifically Qizan al-Najjar, Jourat al-Lut, and al-Manara, consists of approximately 40 militants. It remains stationed there, as these are areas where Israeli forces are still active.

ترددت أنباء عن أن الأسطل انشق عن أبو شباب وشكّل مجموعته لوحده، فيما نفى أبو شباب ذلك عبر صفحته في «فيسبوك» ثم حذف المنشور بعد يوم واحد.

There were reports that al-Astal had split from Abu Shabab and formed his own group. Abu Shabab denied this on his Facebook page, then deleted the post a day later.

حكم على الأسطل وهو ضابط (سابق) في أجهزة أمن السلطة الفلسطينية، عام 2022، بالإعدام من قِبَل حكومة «حماس»، بعدما اتهمته بالمشاركة في اغتيال القيادي في «كتائب القسام» فادي البطش داخل ماليزيا مع عناصر متعاونة مع جهاز «الموساد» عام 2018.

Al-Astal, a former officer in the Palestinian Authority’s security services, was sentenced to death in 2022 by the Hamas government after being accused of participating in the assassination of Qassam Brigades commander Fadi al-Batsh in Malaysia, along with elements collaborating with Mossad, in 2018.

ولم يكن للأسطل نشاط كبير في المناطق التي تنشط فيها «حماس»، ولم ينفذ هجمات كما فعل أبو شباب أو مجموعات أخرى، لأسباب لم تتضح، لكنه كان يحقق مع فلسطينيين اقتربوا من مناطق تمركز قواته.

Al-Astal was not heavily active in areas where Hamas was active, and did not carry out attacks like Abu Shabab or other groups, for reasons that remain unclear. However, he did interrogate Palestinians who approached areas where his forces were deployed.

Section 4

عشيرة المجايدة

Al-Majayda Clan

تعتبر عشيرة المجايدة من العشائر العريقة في قطاع غزة، خصوصاً خان يونس جنوب القطاع، وبعد خلافات بين أفراد منها وعناصر من «كتائب القسام»، قام هؤلاء بقتل اثنين من «القسام»، ثم قتلوا شخصاً وسيطاً حاول حل الخلافات.

The Al-Majayda clan is considered one of the oldest clans in the Gaza Strip, particularly in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip. Following disputes between members of the clan and members of the Qassam Brigades, clan members killed two Qassam Brigades members and then killed a mediator who tried to resolve the dispute.

وبعد أن أمهلت «حماس» العائلة فترة قصيرة لتسليم الفاعلين، وفشل وجهاء ومخاتير العشيرة بذلك، شنّت بمئات من عناصرها هجوماً قبل وقف إطلاق النار بأيام قليلة، وقتلت المطلوبين المتهمين بقتل عناصرها، وصادرت أسلحة، قبل أن تتدخل طائرات إسرائيلية وتقصف عناصر الأمن ما أدى لمقتل نحو 20 منهم.

After Hamas gave the family a short period to hand over the perpetrators, and the clan’s elders and mukhtars failed to do so, it launched an attack with hundreds of its members just days before the ceasefire, killing wanted individuals accused of killing its members and confiscating weapons. Israeli aircraft then intervened and bombed security personnel, killing approximately 20 of them.

وبعد ذلك، تدخل وجهاء ووساطات لحل الخلاف مجتمعياً، وتم الاتفاق على ذلك، وأعلنت العائلة مساء الاثنين الماضي التزامها بتسليم السلاح غير المرخص لدى أفرادها إلى الأجهزة الأمنية، مؤكدةً وقوفها خلف حكومة «حماس» في مواجهة «الفلتان الأمني».

Subsequently, community leaders and mediators intervened to resolve the dispute, and an agreement was reached. Last Monday evening, the family announced its commitment to hand over the unlicensed weapons in the possession of its members to the security services, affirming its support for the Hamas government in confronting the “security chaos.”

وسط القطاع

Central Gaza Strip

في الأشهر القليلة التي سبقت وقف إطلاق النار المؤقت في يناير (كانون الثاني)، وحتى ما بعد استئناف الحرب في مارس (آذار) الماضي، ظهرت على الساحة مجموعتان من أفراد محسوبين على عشيرتين شرق دير البلح وسط القطاع، هما «أبو خماش»، و«أبو مغصيب».

In the few months preceding the temporary ceasefire in January, and even after the resumption of war last March, two groups emerged on the scene composed of individuals affiliated with two clans east of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip: the Abu Khammash and the Abu Mughsib.

لكن سريعاً ما اندحرت هاتان المجموعتان بعد أن وجهت لهما «حماس» ضربات أدت لمقتل وإصابة العديد من أفرادهما…

However, these two groups were quickly defeated after Hamas launched strikes that killed and wounded many of their members…

The Meaning and Grammar of التَّوْفِيقَ وَالسَّدَادَ

The formal Arabic wish التَّوْفِيقَ وَالسَّدَادَ is often just translated as success. Actually, it conveys “(I wish you) divine success and sound judgment”.

Its specific grammatical form is essential to its meaning as a supplication.

Meaning: Guidance and Correctness

The phrase combines two distinct concepts:

  1. التَّوْفِيقُ: More than just “success,” this means “divine guidance” or “enablement.” From the root و-ف-ق (to make suitable/harmonize), it implies success that is specifically granted and guided by God.
  2. السَّدَادُ: This means “soundness,” “correctness of judgment,” or “being on target.” From the root س-د-د (to be straight/correct), it refers to human accuracy and rightness.

Together, the wish is for God-given success and the human wisdom to act correctly.

Grammar: The Accusative Case (النَّصْب)

Both words are in the accusative case (النَّصْب), marked by the fatḥa at the end. This is the most crucial part.

The phrase is an elliptical supplication – the words are objects (مَفْعُول بِهِ) of an omitted verb (فِعْل مَحْذُوف). The full, understood sentence is:

أَسْأَلُ اللهَ التَّوْفِيقَ وَالسَّدَادَ
I ask God for divine success and sound judgment.

This grammatical analysis is correct. In Arabic grammar, the verb سَأَلَ – يَسْأَلُ (to ask) is a classic example of a verb that takes two direct objects (يَنْصِبُ مَفْعُولَيْنِ) when it is used in the sense of “to request” (not “to inquire about”).

It belongs to a well-known category called أَفْعَالُ الْمَنْحِ وَالْعَطَاءِ (verbs of giving and withholding), just like أَعْطَى (to give) and مَنَحَ (to grant).

The analysis of the full sentence is:

  • أَسْأَلُ: The verb (فِعْل). The subject (فَاعِل) is an implied “I” (أَنَا).
  • اللهَ: The first direct object (مَفْعُول بِهِ أَوَّل). This is whom is being asked.
  • التَّوْفِيقَ: The second direct object (مَفْعُول بِهِ ثَانٍ). This is what is being asked for.
  • وَالسَّدَادَ (and soundness) is then coordinated (مَعْطُوف) with the second object, so it also takes the accusative case.

Usage dropped the verb “I ask God…” for brevity, but the words grammatically remain objects, preserving their accusative form.

If the phrase were in the nominative case (التَّوْفِيقُ وَالسَّدَادُ), it would simply be a statement (“Success and soundness…”), not a wish or request. The accusative case is what signals the supplication.

Understood Structure:

(أَسْأَلُ اللهَ) التَّوْفِيقَ وَالسَّدَادَ

Literally: (I ask God for) divine success and sound judgment.
