Diplomatic news isn’t always about dry treaties and closed-door meetings.

In the following example, we look at how Egyptian media covered French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Egypt on May 19, 2026, where he was spotted jogging in the streets and taking selfies with locals.

This headline reads more like a personalized greeting card than hard news. First, notice the use of لِـ (to) right after the speaker’s name: The President to Macron. This is standard journalistic shorthand for “said to”. The headline then uses the accusative case (مَنْصُوبٌ) to describe Macron’s status: ضَيْفًا عَزِيزًا (a dear guest).

Pay attention to cultural epithets Arabic headlines and feature writing often use well-known poetic nicknames for places, either instead of the formal name or alongside it. Here, instead of simply saying الإِسْكَنْدَرِيَّة (Alexandria), the headline uses the city’s famous epithet: عَرُوسُ البَحْرِ المُتَوَسِّطِ (the Bride of the Mediterranean). Similar place epithets include أَرْضُ الكِنَانَة (literally the Land of the Quiver, meaning the land of the arrow-case; a traditional poetic name for Egypt) and مَدِينَةُ الضَّبَاب (the City of Fog) for London.

For people who have been to Alexandria – this is the area where Macron went jogging.

It seems that the Emirati president, Mohammed bin Zayed, has decided to go all the way in defending his regime and his influence, placing his entire bet, almost openly, on Israel and the United States, without taking any precautions against the risks this may bring for the regime and the state — risks that have, in turn, become clear and tangible.

على أن هذا الرهان ليس جديداً، بل إن التدرّج الذي طبَعه يوحي بأن ابن زايد يستعدّ له منذ سنوات طويلة.

Yet this wager is not new. Rather, the gradual pattern that has marked it suggests that bin Zayed has been preparing for it for many years.

The first is that the seven emirates that make up the state were constantly in dispute among themselves before the West helped Zayed unify them by subjecting the ruling families to his authority, after agreeing with him on the identity of the state and on his interests in it.

والثاني، أنها تنتمي إلى جغرافيا لها اسم تاريخي، هو عُمان.

The second is that it belongs to a geography that has a historical name: Oman.

Therefore, the sons of Zayed, like their father, have a special sensitivity toward the Sultanate of Oman, and border disputes with it. The state also has border disputes with Saudi Arabia, upon which a mountain of conflicts has accumulated, now extending to everything: from geography, to regional role, to strategic bets.

وتتفجّر صراعات بينهما من اليمن إلى السودان والقرن الأفريقي، وصولاً إلى العلاقات مع إسرائيل التي صار يتعيّن عليها حكماً أن تكون مع أحدهما على حساب الآخر، وهو ما أدركته الأخيرة التي صارت تحاول عبثاً التوفيق، ليس بين البلدَين، وإنما بين العلاقتَين.

On his way toward his new objective, it seems that bin Zayed has decided to sacrifice the Dubai model, which is not compatible with involvement in wars.

This would make the emirate — the only one among the six other emirates that has a viable option away from Abu Dhabi in times of peace — dependent on the latter, which possesses most of the oil, and would place it more firmly under bin Zayed’s grip.

Indeed, he has become more exposed to American and Israeli manipulation. According to what the British newspaper The Telegraph recently reported from American officials, the US president, Donald Trump, asked him to occupy the Iranian island of Lavan, so that there would be Emirati soldiers on Iranian soil instead of American ones.

لكنّ المخاطر الكبرى الكامنة في خيار التورّط في الحرب، والتي يدركها ابن زايد، ظهرت في تقرير لوكالة “بلومبرغ”، تحدّث عن إحباط غير مسبوق داخل قصر الشاطئ في أبو ظبي، بعد رفض دول الخليج فكرة الردّ العسكري الجماعي على إيران، وهو ما دفع الرئيس الإماراتي إلى الذهاب وحده في هذا الخيار.

But the major risks inherent in the choice of becoming involved in the war — risks that bin Zayed is aware of — appeared in a report by Bloomberg, which spoke of unprecedented frustration inside Al Shati Palace in Abu Dhabi after the Gulf states rejected the idea of a collective military response to Iran. This pushed the Emirati president to go alone in this option.
