Gender matters

When the internet went down on an airplane, a message appeared that raised grammatical questions.

Diagnosis: Spelling

Arabic text in question

ู„ุง ูŠูˆุฌุฏ ุชุบุทูŠุฉ ุฃู‚ู…ุงุฑ ุตู†ุงุนูŠุฉ ุญุงู„ูŠุง

Arabic text as it should be

ู„ุง ุชููˆุฌูŽุฏู ุชูŽุบู’ุทููŠูŽุฉู ุฃูŽู‚ู’ู…ุงุฑู ุตูู†ุงุนููŠู‘ูŽุฉู ุญุงู„ููŠู‘ู‹ุง

Note: You don’t use diacritics (ุชุดูƒูŠู„) in everyday Arabic. We use them here to clearly explain the grammar, spelling and meaning of words. To avoid confusion, we generally ignore auxiliary vowels that are necessary for pronunciation to avoid clusters.

Analysis

This message (which literally means there is no satellite coverage currently) appeared when the Internet stopped working during an Emirates flight.

We will be very strict in this analysis because the verb-subject relationship in Arabic is not always as clear as it might seem. This is especially true for nouns that have acquired the feminine gender through endings (ุฉ or ู‰ or ุงุก), which is the case in our example of the word ุชูŽุบู’ุทููŠุฉูŒ, which means coverage; covering.

โžค In principle, it is not a mistake to use the masculine form in a situation like this. However, grammarians mostly agree that the feminine form is better (ุงู„ู’ุฃูŽูู’ุตูŽุญู) and should be used. Since we are talking about official information on an airplane, it is recommended to use the most correct version.

Let’s begin our analysis.

In Arabic, the verb ูŠููˆุฌูŽุฏู (is found = there is; present tense, passive) should match the gender of the subject. The word ุชูŽุบู’ุทููŠุฉูŒ is feminine (ู…ูุคูŽู†ูŽู‘ุซูŒ), so the verb should be ุชููˆุฌูŽุฏู and not ูŠููˆุฌูŽุฏู.

Version on the airplane:

ู„ุง ูŠูˆุฌุฏ ุชุบุทูŠุฉ ุฃู‚ู…ุงุฑ ุตู†ุงุนูŠุฉ ุญุงู„ูŠุง

Improved version (ุงู„ู’ุฃูŽูู’ุตูŽุญู):

ู„ุง ุชูˆุฌุฏ ุชุบุทูŠุฉ ุฃู‚ู…ุงุฑ ุตู†ุงุนูŠุฉ ุญุงู„ูŠุง
