Diagnosis: Spelling
Arabic text in question
إنتبه
Arabic text as it should be
انتبه
Note: You don’t use diacritics (تشكيل) in everyday Arabic. We use them here to clearly explain the grammar, spelling and meaning of words. To avoid confusion, we generally ignore auxiliary vowels that are necessary for pronunciation to avoid consonant clusters.
Analysis
The word إنتبه on the sign is incorrectly written because it starts with إ, a so-called همزة القطع (“cutting Hamza”), which is wrong here.
The correct spelling is: اِنْتَبِهْ – with a so-called همزة الوصل (“connecting Hamza”).
Why?
The verb اِنْتَبَهَ – يَنْتَبِهُ (to pay attention) is a form VIII verb in Arabic. Verbs of this form begin with ا (Aleph without Hamza) — adding a ء at the start is a spelling mistake. The همزة الوصل – the letter ا -, helps to deal with consonant clusters. People make this spelling mistake because such a device may be pronounced as a glottal stop (but only at the beginning of the utterance and only there!) – but you never write the ء visibly.
So, the sign should say انتبه, which is the imperative (masculine form), meaning “Watch out!” or “Be careful!”
