Service, Misdiagnosed

The English offers a chaperone service. The Arabic offers patient-accompaniment services insteadโ€”plus questionable agreement and a dose of bureaucratic wording.

Some translation mistakes change a word. This one changes the job description.

The English side of this healthcare sign offers a chaperone service. In the Arabic, however, the chaperone seems to have wandered off. What we get instead is something closer to patient-accompaniment services – which could easily mean helping or escorting patients rather than having someone present during a medical examination.

And that is not the only thing going on. There is an agreement wobble, one service quietly multiplying into several, and a final instruction that is perfectly understandable but not quite what an Arabic institutional sign would normally say. Time for a small linguistic check-up.

Diagnosis: Grammar, Meaning

The Arabic has three main problems:

  1. The verb agreement is awkward.
  2. The English singular service becomes the plural ุฎูŽุฏูŽู…ูŽุงุช.
  3. And ู…ูุฑูŽุงููŽู‚ูŽุฉูŒ ู„ูู„ู’ู…ูŽุฑู’ุถูŽู‰ shifts the meaning from a medical chaperone to something closer to accompanying or escorting patients.

The final instruction with ุงู„ุชู‘ูŽูˆูŽุงุตูู„ is understandable, but ุงู„ูุงุณู’ุชููู’ุณูŽุงุฑ better matches the formal register and the actual purpose of the sign.

Arabic text as it should be

ุชูŽุชูŽูˆูŽุงููŽุฑู ู„ูŽุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ูŽุง ุฎูุฏู’ู…ูŽุฉู ู…ูุฑูŽุงููŽู‚ูŽุฉู ู„ูู„ู’ู…ูŽุฑู’ุถูŽู‰.

This version deliberately stays close to the sign. It fixes the agreement, brings the service back into the singular, and replaces ุงู„ุชู‘ูŽูˆูŽุงุตูู„ with the more natural institutional wording ุงู„ูุงุณู’ุชููู’ุณูŽุงุฑู ู…ูู†ู’ ุฃูŽุญูŽุฏู ุงู„ู’ู…ููˆูŽุธู‘ูŽูููŠู†ูŽ. But it does not yet solve the bigger problem: what exactly is this service supposed to be?

Note: You don’t normally use diacritics (ุชุดูƒูŠู„) in everyday Arabic. We use them here to make the grammar, spelling and pronunciation clearer. To keep things readable, we generally leave out purely auxiliary vowels that may appear in connected speech to break up consonant clusters.

Analysis

Now for the more interesting problem: you can repair the grammar and still be left with the wrong translation. ุฎูุฏู’ู…ูŽุฉู ู…ูุฑูŽุงููŽู‚ูŽุฉู ู„ูู„ู’ู…ูŽุฑู’ุถูŽู‰ still sounds like a service for accompanying patients. If we also fix the meaning, I would make the medical situation explicit:

You can request a staff chaperone during the medical examination. For more details, please ask a member of staff.

The agreement wobbles

The word ุฎูŽุฏูŽู…ูŽุงุช is a non-human plural. With ุฎูŽุฏูŽู…ูŽุงุชูŒ as the delayed subject, the straightforward modern form is feminine singular, so ุชูŽุชูŽูˆูŽุงููŽุฑู is more natural than ูŠูŽุชูŽูˆูŽุงููŽุฑู. We therefore get: ุชูŽุชูŽูˆูŽุงููŽุฑู ู„ูŽุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ูŽุง ุฎูŽุฏูŽู…ูŽุงุชูŒ.

That does not make the masculine ูŠูŽุชูŽูˆูŽุงููŽุฑู impossible under every grammatical analysis. Traditional agreement rules allow more latitude when a feminine subject is separated from its verb by another element, and here ู„ูŽุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ูŽุง creates exactly that separation. So this is not quite a simple case of wrong verb, right verb. Still, on a modern public sign, ุชูŽุชูŽูˆูŽุงููŽุฑู is the clearer, unmarked choice. The very common ุชูŽุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽุฑู would work as well.

One service became several

The English refers to one chaperone service, while the Arabic uses the plural ุฎูŽุฏูŽู…ูŽุงุช. Translators obviously do not have to copy English number mechanically, so the plural is not a grammatical error by itself. Here, however, it helps turn one defined service into a rather vague category of patient-accompaniment services. ุฎูุฏู’ู…ูŽุฉ is tighter and closer to what the sign actually means.

The chaperone wandered off

The phrase ุฎูŽุฏูŽู…ูŽุงุชู ู…ูุฑูŽุงููŽู‚ูŽุฉู ู„ูู„ู’ู…ูŽุฑู’ุถูŽู‰ naturally suggests services for accompanying or escorting patients. In this medical context, however, a “chaperone” is someone who is present during the examination. The original Arabic never mentions the examination, so the crucial part of the meaning simply disappears.

This is more than a slightly unfortunate choice of noun. The real problem is that the Arabic has removed the context that tells us what kind of ู…ูุฑูŽุงููŽู‚ูŽุฉ is meant. Once ุฃูŽุซู’ู†ูŽุงุกูŽ ุงู„ู’ููŽุญู’ุตู ุงู„ุทู‘ูุจู‘ููŠู‘ู is added, the role becomes much harder to misread.

There is no reason to hunt for a magical one-word equivalent when a descriptive phrase does the job better. Something like ุญูุถููˆุฑู ู…ูุฑูŽุงููู‚ู ู…ูู†ูŽ ุงู„ุทู‘ูŽุงู‚ูŽู…ู ุฃูŽุซู’ู†ูŽุงุกูŽ ุงู„ู’ููŽุญู’ุตู ุงู„ุทู‘ูุจู‘ููŠู‘ู carries the meaning much more clearly – and keeps the chaperone where the chaperone is supposed to be.

The word ุงู„ุชู‘ูŽูˆูŽุงุตูู„ is not wrong – but ุงู„ูุงุณู’ุชููู’ุณูŽุงุฑ fits better

The phrase ูŠูุฑู’ุฌูŽู‰ ุงู„ุชู‘ูŽูˆูŽุงุตูู„ู ู…ูŽุนูŽ ุฃูŽุญูŽุฏู ุงู„ู’ู…ููˆูŽุธู‘ูŽูููŠู†ูŽ is grammatical and perfectly understandable: Please contact or communicate with a member of staff.

But ุงู„ุชู‘ูŽูˆูŽุงุตูู„ is broad. The sign is doing something much more specific: it is telling the patient where to ask for information.

That is why ูŠูุฑู’ุฌูŽู‰ ุงู„ูุงุณู’ุชููู’ุณูŽุงุฑู ู…ูู†ู’ ุฃูŽุญูŽุฏู ุงู„ู’ู…ููˆูŽุธู‘ูŽูููŠู†ูŽ is a better fit. It is more formal than ูŠูุฑู’ุฌูŽู‰ ุณูุคูŽุงู„ู ุฃูŽุญูŽุฏู ุงู„ู’ู…ููˆูŽุธู‘ูŽูููŠู†ูŽ, but on an institutional healthcare sign that formality is useful rather than stiff. ุณูุคูŽุงู„ is grammatically fine; ุงู„ูุงุณู’ุชููู’ุณูŽุงุฑ simply sounds more like the register we would expect on an Arabic public sign.

Alternative option

If we want to keep the original “service is available” structure while making the medical context explicit, this would also work:
