Diagnosis: Spelling

You would expect the General Headquarters of a major foundation to have a solid base, but the Ensar Vakfı in Istanbul seems to have built its Arabic name on shaky spelling.

Etched onto the glass entrance of their HQ, the Arabic translation of the foundation’s name dropped a small but vital piece of the alphabet: the Hamza.

Note: You don’t use diacritics (تشكيل) in everyday Arabic. We use them here to clearly explain the grammar, spelling and meaning of words. To avoid confusion, we generally ignore auxiliary vowels that are necessary for pronunciation to avoid consonant clusters.

Analysis

The sign falls victim to the most common error in modern signage: Hamza neglect.

• The sign displays the word as الانصار, using a bare Aleph. This suggests a Connecting Hamza (هَمْزَةُ وَصْل), which is incorrect for this word. Even when the definite article al– is attached, the Hamza on the noun itself must remain visible.
• The word Ansar (أَنْصار) is a plural noun following the pattern Afʿāl (أَفْعَال). In Arabic, nouns on this pattern must always carry the Cutting Hamza (هَمْزَةُ قَطْع).

The irony here is historical. For a foundation whose name is derived directly from Islamic history and Arabic tradition, dropping the Hamza on the very word that defines them is a surprising oversight in identity.

The Ensar Vakfı (Ensar Foundation) is a well-known organization in Turkey, operating since 1979.

The name “Ensar” refers to the Ansar (The Helpers) – the citizens of Medina who supported the Prophet Muhammad and the Muhajirun (Emigrants).
