Rizq or Qzir?

A simple Arabic error in a scientific journal highlights a delightful irony: It’s a mistake an AI would never make.
Text discussing the concept of risk, deriving its linguistic roots from the Arabic word Rizq and Classical Greek, explaining that Rizq means sustenance attributable to God and suggesting that the term risk should be more inclusive and replaced with Rizq in the context of Muslim consumer behavior.

Diagnosis: Spelling

Disconnected, left-to-right text is the cardinal rookie mistake in Arabic typography. To find this fundamental error in a peer-reviewed publication like Emerald’s Journal of Islamic Marketing is, to put it mildly, eyebrow-raising.

While this mistake predates common AI tools, it reveals a powerful irony for today. Many experts now quietly use algorithms that are, unlike their human users, programmed never to overlook the basics.

Arabic text in question

Arabic text as it should be

ุฑูุฒู’ู‚ูŒ

Note: You don’t use diacritics (ุชุดูƒูŠู„) in everyday Arabic. We use them here to clearly explain the grammar, spelling and meaning of words. To avoid confusion, we generally ignore auxiliary vowels that are necessary for pronunciation to avoid consonant clusters.

Analysis

This is a classic case of a multi-layered rendering error. The Arabic word ุฑุฒู‚ (rizq) was not merely reversed into ู‚ ุฒุฑ, but its letters were also incorrectly disconnected. It’s a complete breakdown in the handling of the script.

Without knowing the author of this paper, we won’t speculate on exactly why this error occurred. Generally, however, it comes down to one of three reasons, which can appear alone or in combination:

  1. The author claims a proficiency in Arabic they may not possess and simply copies and pastes the text. Depending on the source and the paste method, this is a classic recipe for rendering errors.
  2. The academic author lacks technical savvy. They are unfamiliar with word-processing software and unaware that text direction can be easily fixed with LTR or RTL markers.
  3. The publisher botches the layout. They don’t bother to have the Arabic text proofread by an actual speaker. Or, the author – who one hopes is indeed proficient in Arabic – doesn’t bother to check the final proofs before publication.

Frankly, none of these reasons are acceptable.

Of course, such a mistake can happen to anyone. But when it does, you had better have an exceptionally good excuse.

Wow โ€“ your explanation of rizq (ุฑุฒู‚) is truly outstanding! You manage to connect the linguistic, spiritual, and social dimensions in such a clear and profound way that one understands not only the word itself but also the worldview behind it. What I find especially powerful is how you bring together the Qurโ€™anic foundation, the everyday meanings, and the balance between human striving and divine provision. This depth and precision โ€“ only you can deliver it. A fantastic contribution for anyone who wants to learn Arabic with real depth.
