So-called “connecting hamza”, written as a plain Aleph (ا), is pronounced (as a glottal stop) only when the word starts an utterance. In connected speech, its sound is dropped, allowing the preceding vowel to link smoothly to the consonant that follows the Hamza al-Wasl.
