Kitāb al-‘Ayn (كِتاب الْعَيْن) is the first Arabic language dictionary, compiled in the 8th century by al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi. It is notable for its unique phonetic arrangement, starting with the deepest letter in the throat, ‘ayn (ع), and is considered one of the earliest known dictionaries of any language.
